The Sisters of Mercy at St. Paul

The Sisters of Mercy have a long lineage, starting with their founding in 1831 by Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Ireland. The Mercys were the first of their kind to go out from their convent to visit and care for the poor. The religious foundations started by Catherine McAuley in Ireland and England (she was responsible for the first convents to be built in England since the Protestant Reformation) have since spread throughout the Americas and the Caribbean. Yet, in the 170 years since their start, they have never wavered from their commitment to care for the poor, the sick and the uneducated, by building convents, schools and hospitals wherever they went. The Sisters of Mercy started St. Paul's School more than 120 years ago and are still devoting themselves to the welfare of the school and the parish, despite their diminished numbers. They live on the parish grounds in their convent at 216 Nassau Street, in a building now attached to the school as if it were possible to bind them more tightly to the school than they have always been.
